Renaissance and Medieval Weddings

Would you like a truly romantic wedding? Have you always been inspired and touched by the Renaissance and Medieval periods of history. Are you charmed by the tale of Robin Hood and Maid Marian. Have you ever wanted to be a royal. Plan a wedding for the Renaissance or Medieval period of history.

Here a few simple suggestions to help your wedding fantasy along the way.

Clothing:

Brides during this era wore dark velvet dresses. They came in dark colors like deep purple or hunter green. Some of the dresses laced up the back or the sides. They flowed floor length with pleats and long sleeved. They were low cut but done in taste. Sometimes metallic ribbon ran through the dress design.

For today's bride who wants this type of wedding to stick to the above type dress for herself and bridesmaids. Hair should always be left down and flowing free. Instead of a veil use a crown wreath of ivy or flowers. You may even attach ribbons to hang down if you so desire. Costume stores have period clothing available and cost less than the traditional wedding dress in most cases.

Men should dress in tights, breeches, tunics, pirate shirts, laced vest and boots are a must.

You need not purchase these costumes either, check out your local costume rental store.

Location:

Medieval and Renaissance weddings were usually held in a church or outdoors. Look for a church or hall that has a Gothic or medieval look to it. Such as ones that are made of stone with lots of stained glass. Decorate the church with a banner, heavy wooden chairs for the guests, vine wreaths on the doors and votive candles set in gold or dark green holders.

If your opting for the outdoors decorate your space with lots of ivy, scrolls, family crest, banners hung down from wooden dowels and large baskets of flowers. You can add flowered garland on wooden or iron poles if they are present. Use big wood chunky candle holders. Check out your thrift stores. A lot of candle holders and garland can be found there.

You may also wish to hold your wedding at the Renaissance Fair. Nearly all states and counties hold one. Medieval dinner theaters are also a great place to get married and sometimes will have special packages for such a occasion.

Flowers:

This type of wedding has the unmistakable use of herbs. Rosemary, Thyme, Basil usually play a distinctive role in the flowers.
The use of herbs was to signify health and destiny.

Flowers just like the attire should be in rich deep colors such as red, orange, purple, brown, green.

Bridal bouquet should be large in size, overflowing and hand tied with a ribbon. Do not forget to add a small amount of wheat to the bouquet, it is a symbol of fertility. All flowers should appear natural. Remember there were no floral shops back then.

Invitations:

Should use calligraphy-style fonts with elaborate borders. Parchment paper should be used. Fold the invitations in thirds and seal with a wax seal. Enclose each invite in a parchment envelope.

Music:

Hire musicians that can play Renaissance or Medieval music. A Harpist can add a elegant touch. If you can not find musicians or do not wish the expense, Renaissance or Medieval music tapes or Cd's are fine.

Ceremony:

The music for ceremony should be done by pipe organ, flute, harp or lute. The ceremony should take place outside the church doors. Just like today the man stands on the right side and the bride on the left. The priest will begin by asking if anyone knows why this couple should not be married. He then will ask the couple if there is any reason why they should not be married.

The wording of the ceremony varies some. The priest asks the grooms name and says "wilt thou have this woman to be thy wedded wife, wilt thou love her, and honor her, keep her and guard her, in health and in sickness, as a husband should a wife, forsaking all others on account of her, keep thee only unto her, so long as ye both shall live?" The priest than asks the same of the woman. You both should answer by saying "I will". Then the woman is given away by her father.

The saying of the vows will be next. Both bride and groom say, "I (name), take thee (name) to be my wedded wife/husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness, and in health, till death do us part, if the holy church will ordain it: And thereto I plight thee my troth." The rings are given to the priest to be blessed and than exchanged.

Since the couple is outside to exchange vows they now enter the church for the blessing.

Cake:

Pancake-sized cakes are made for each guest. The guests stack these as high as possible in front of the bride and groom.
The couple than share a kiss over the stack.

Reception:

Find a caterer that can serve foods from that era. Roasted meats, cheese, vegetable filled pastry. Remember people ate with their hands back then, along with a spoon and a knife no bigger than a steak knife. Please remember to let your guest know that the wedding has a theme. Make sure invitations are mailed in plenty of time in case the guest wish to rent or make their own costumes.

The seasons have changed from spring to summer, and now the lovely fall has arrived. The greens change to different shades of browns, oranges and golds and the wind starts to pick up sending chills down your spine but not enough to chill your bones. If you live where the heat never seems to die down, like I do in Florida, this time of year is one of the most beautiful times to have a wonderful outdoor wedding, or an even more fantastic indoor wedding if that's what you desire.

Let's paint a picture of a beautiful fall festival wedding from invitation to reception.

Maple leaves create a frame for the wedding invitation, a classic ivory stock paper with dark orange writing on it. Laced on the side, closing the invitation is a simple gold colored bow which also holds the RSVP card inside with a small envelope to send it away. As the days creep closer to the wedding date, the weather seems to be getting a bit cooler each day. As the air cools, the sun is still shining enough to make the church windows glow brightly inside the walls.

The date has come, deep within the fall season and the church is all set up for the wedding. The bride's wishes have been carried out to perfection, making the inner workings of the church look like a famous painting. The candles lit and the lighting dim with the sun still fairly high in the sky outside. The flower girl dressed in a soft pastel yellow dress with a dark, chocolate brown sash around the middle as a nod to the fall season. In her hands, is a butterscotch Flower Girl basket, filled with beautiful rose petals of white, yellow, and red that she sprinkles along a deep gold carpet that eases its way between the aisles of church pews. The youngest of the men in the wedding party soon makes his entrance, the ring bearer, dressed in a nice fitting suit with a cute yellow bow tie, in his hands is a chocolate brown ring pillow with the groom's and bride's wedding bands firmly attached to it so they don't slip away.

The bride enters the gold carpet that is now scattered with rose petals under her shoes, her father (or mother) meeting her at the start of the aisle to walk with her and to give her away. She's dressed in a beautiful, long sleeves laced down to her wrists while the bodice of her dress has fine ivory floral designs making the dress seem less flat on her body. Her groom waits for her at the altar as she walks up to him, bright and smiling since this fall day has been long awaited by both of them.

Bridesmaids wear beautiful burnt orange dresses, deep golds, and browns - depending on what each one chose from the color scheme the bride gave them. The groomsmen also wear the same color vests with a plain black tie. The groom wears a regular tux with a white vest, though his tie is a dark orange color tucked behind the vest to add a splash of color. With the sun streaming into the painted windows of the church, this looks like it is a scene right out of a movie.

The reception is filled with the same movie like feeling. Instead of the traditional whites, the bride decided gold table clothes with chocolate laced chairs were the best way to go to make the inside of hall more whimsical. On the tables are assorted leaf design candle holders which have a folded piece of paper in front of them designating the seats of the guests. In the front of the hall is a mocha brown fall wedding guestbook for all the guests to sign for the bride and groom. Music is lively, happy, and everyone is able to dance the evening away as the night air grows cooler. Beautiful autumn wedding cake candles are a wedding favor to everyone, though of course they'd probably wish it was as good to eat as it looked!

This wedding was a beautiful fall wedding festival enjoyed by the couple and each of their guests.

Wedding Traditions of Different Cultures, Part 1

Upon looking at wedding photos in different countries, it made me curious of the many different cultural traditions of each country. I hope you enjoy learning about them as much as I did.

Cuba is known for their many different festivities during a wedding. The most popular one is probably the money dance. This is where all of the men who dance with the bride, pins money on to her dress to help with the expenses of the honeymoon.

The French have a two-handled cup they use to toast to the couple's marriage. They also signify the joining of two families by raising a glass of wine from two different vineyards. They then pour the wine into a third glass which both the bride and groom drink from.

A tradition that the African-Americans started during slavery is jumping over a decorated broom to symbolize the beginning of a new life. Today, the jumping of a broom is a symbol of sweeping away the old, and welcoming the new. Broom jumping can be performed either at the wedding ceremony, after the minister pronounces the newlyweds husband and wife, or at the wedding reception just after the Bridal party enters the reception area.

In Germany the bride carries salt and bread in her pocket to ensure bounty. The groom carries grain for wealth and good fortune. The flower girl proceeds in front of the bride as they walk down the path leading to the church. On her way she sprinkles flower petals to wish good luck and ward off evil spirits. During the wedding ceremony the groom may kneel on the hem of the bride's dress to symbolize his control over her. Not to be outdone, the bride may step on the groom's foot when she rises to symbolize her power over him.

In Thailand, the groom is expected to give dowry money to the bride's parents. After the ceremony, the bride's parents usually, (but not always), gives half of the money back to the newlywed couple. The groom is also expected to buy gold jewelry for the bride. Not just one ring set, but rings, bracelet, necklace, and ear rings. They must be nearly pure gold. Before the wedding, the bride must have an older relative to act as chaperon - no matter the age of the bride to be. The groom has to buy a new suit and new shoes. If he buys a new house, he has to buy all new furniture. If renting, he has to buy new linens, a new rice cooker, and new dishes. The day of the wedding, the bride and groom go to the temple early in the morning with gifts of food for the monks. Later that day they go to the Holy House, the temple of the Maitreya Buddhist Sect, of where the bride is a member - then the first ceremony is performed. (There is sometimes up to three ceremonies at different locations). Guests may carry symbolic plants, like sugar cane, for luck, and a small banana tree, for fertility. The mother of the bride makes negotiations for the plants, which the groom will have to pay after the ceremony. Children hold a gold cord at the beginning and end of the walk to the bride, which in order for the groom to pass, he must give a red envelope containing money to the children. At the end of the ceremony, the groom is presented with a sword, which is a symbol to defend his family. Silk cords are tied around the bride and groom's right wrist, where the bride's mother blesses their future happiness. The leader passes a long silk cord that is connected to a flower arrangement across the altar placing it between the thumb and forefinger of the praying hands. All the guests come two-by-two to tie silk cords around the bride and groom's wrists. After, a song is sung and a story about the couple's courtship is told. A ceramic bottle containing water is given to the couple where they pour it into another ceramic vessel. This is asking for forgiveness of sins in the past life and present.

Fresh fruits like pineapple, papaya, mango, can be served with macadamia nuts, traditional Hawaiian bread, and tropical punch. Add in poi and pork roast, and you have a traditional aloha party meal fit for any islander.

Last week many newspapers and telecasts reported on the use of cadmium in children's jewelry. Cadmium is a bluish-white metal that is found naturally in the earth's crust. Manufacturers started using cadmium in jewelry as a replacement for lead. Lead became known as dangerous because people who had repeated contact with it became seriously ill because of its toxic nature. Cadmium rates high in toxicity according to Bruce Fowler of US Center of Disease Control and Prevention. He said, "Cadmium is a poison and hazardous substance."

Cadmium is a pliable metal and does not easily corrode. It is cheap and easy to make jewelry with. The jewelry items in suspicion were coming from China. Cadmium was found in jewelry sold at Walmart, Claire's, and dollar stores. It is not illegal to sell jewelry with cadmium so no law was broken. Walmart said it would pull any children's jewelry that was questionable. The health concern is that cadmium is a carcinogen (can cause cancer) and can interfere with brain development. Children especially at young ages can suck on jewelry and there is uncertainty about skin contact and what may possibly happen over a period of time.

Hearing all this once again had my ten year old daughter and me going through her fashion jewelry. She did not have many pieces as I happen to make jewelry. She did have about four items including the best friend's bracelet where the girls each have a bracelet with half a heart on it. She was very good about just throwing it all away once I explained it could be dangerous to her. This was a good reminder for me to stay with my earlier conviction that sticking with gold and sterling silver (.925) is the best way to go when purchasing jewelry as it eliminates any uncertain feelings about the purchase and those precious metals have never had a health concern related to it. I have been in a store and have said no even when it was hard to those pleading faces and the price was right and they even had their own money. I am strengthened and resolved once again in this matter.

As parents we are concerned for our child's health and well being. We continually learn and look to be informed as we help navigate the best possible course for our children. Another fact worthy of mentioning is Canada Health was inspecting jewelry trinkets from China and discovered a plastic bracelet with dangle charms that said lead free on the package but were actually loaded with lead when tested. This is another indication that we need to be careful and alert our children when age appropriate to these real concerns. Hopefully, my girls have learned from our fashion jewelry discussion and will make wise jewelry purchases in the future. A great guideline to follow for many reasons is to only purchase jewelry that is made with gold or sterling silver.

Before placing a centerpiece, you may strew fall leaves and or wheat on the reception tables and on the cake tale.

Place A Horn of plenty, a basket or a hollowed pumpkin lined with fall leaves or popcorn and filled with fall fruit, berries, nuts, gourds, mini-pumpkins and-or acorns as your centerpiece.

Pumpkin Ice Sculpture

Carve out the inside of pumpkins and place candles in them. If you plan a buffet, you may line hollowed pumpkins with foil and using them as serving dishes.

Fall floral arrangements in a straw basket or hollowed pumpkin.

Place 3 or 4 fall color candles of various sizes in hurricane lamps. The candles may be cinnamon, cranberry, spice or apple scented.

Sexy Costumes to Wear for Halloween

These are a list of some costumes that I have seen people wear at a few parties. Some of these might be a little over the top but if you want to have some fun and be carefree for one night out of the year and you're still deciding on what to wear to the upcoming Halloween party, then take a moment to read through this list. You may even want to mix and match a few.

Playboy Bunny - You've probably seen these costumes before. I have seen some women wear the bunny nose which in my opinion should be left out. The outfit itself is sexy and the nose just kind of kills it. It reminds me of a scene in the movie I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry where Adam Sandler sees who he has mistaken as Jessica Biel in a bunny outfit but when she turns around, it's David Spade! Blah! No offense to David Spade!

French Maid - Now this is hot! I've seen a couple of women wear this and this is definitely an eye catcher. There seems to be different version of this costume but my favorite seems to be the one that isn't fluffy at the skirt. I'm not sure what the correct terminology is but there are the maid outfits that are short and flare out. The shortness is fine but the flaring seems a bit too much.

Jane - Tarzan's fair maiden. If you are attending an indoor Halloween party, then you shouldn't have any problems with this outfit. I've seen a lot of different versions of this costume and all of them looked amazing! I knew a friend who put on a bikini and tucked in some brown felt material around her top and bottom and looked just like she came out of the jungle!

Nurse - If you've seen one, you've seen them all but I think the best nurse outfits are the ones that resemble the old nurse's uniforms with the hat and dress in high heels. The leather outfits are sexy but a little played out for my taste.

Indian (Native) - Theses are the Pocahontas type costumes with a single feather protruding from the head band. Short p/leather material skirts and tops, an Indian necklace, moccasins, arm band, and bracelets and you're good to go!

Indian (Bollywood) - This style has been seen more frequently and quite frankly, I think that they're sexy as well as elegant and beautiful. They have the little dot on their foreheads (bindi), a midriff top, silky loose pants, high heels, with a long scarf which I believe to be called a Sari wrapped loosely around their shoulders. I've seen these outfits mixed with a little Western style and it looks beautiful.

Flight Attendant - I've only seen one of these costumes at a party and it looked HOT! The little hat, coat, with a button up shirt that is not necessarily buttoned up, short skirt, and high heels...need I say more?

Mafiosa - I've seen this pulled off a couple of different ways. The outfits are supposed to portray the way the gangsters looked during the 1920's. One woman had a full striped suit with slacks, high heels, and a very sexy shirt underneath her coat, a fake Tommy gun, and the distinctive hats they wore back in those days. The other outfit was similar only with a loose skirt, high boots, a long coat, the hat, and a fake Tommy gun. Both were very hot.

Police - I generally wouldn't add this to my list except for the fact that I saw this one women in Vegas during a costume party and she had on a realistic looking police uniform, badge, fake gun (at least I think it was), holster, belt, cuffs, and here hair was slicked back and tied up in a bun. Her shirt was a bit revealing and I think the fact that the costume appeared so realistic as opposed to those played out pleather police skirts you see so often, made it so attractive.

Polynesian Girl - What many refer to as a Hula Dancer. This can be pulled off a couple of different ways. First method includes a grass skirt or sarong, coconut top or bikini top, a flower lei, and haku lei (the one that goes on the head). The second method involves wearing a Hawaiian dress of sorts, and haku lei. The second is bit more conservative depending on the dress but still sexy.
